Flying at Waltham first began in 1933, a grass airfield and aero club, as war loomed the the Air ministry started looking for suitable locations for RAF bases. The airfield was requisitioned in May 1940 and construction of concrete runways and buildings began during the summer.
RAF Grimsby ( Waltham ) became operational in November 1941 when the Wellington bombers of 142 Squadron arrived, followed by 100 Squadron flying Lancasters in December 1942, the Squadrons first operational sortie was a minelaying (Gardening) operation on the night of March 4th 1943.
This image of Waltham clearly shows the three runways, technical area and old pre war hanger on the right of the pictures, JB603 was on the dispersal marked in red when the picture of her with crews was taken in 1944.
